Role (Overview of the Position)
The Farmer’s
Market Sales Specialist is the face of Steadfast Farms at farmers' markets and
community events. This position is responsible for representing our brand with
professionalism, warmth, and product expertise to build lasting customer
relationships and drive sales. The role requires deep knowledge of our poultry
products, farming practices, and values, as well as the ability to engage with
customers, manage inventory, handle a point-of-sale system, and maintain a
clean, organized, and visually appealing setup. This individual ensures the
market operation runs smoothly, sales goals are met, and customer feedback is
communicated to the management team. The ideal candidate thrives in a
fast-paced environment, enjoys meaningful customer interaction, and takes pride
in promoting ethical, regenerative, and local food systems.
Responsibilities (Tasks Associated with the Role)
On-Farm Market Prep
- Review the market packing list and ensure order
accuracy.
- Pack frozen/cold products safely and compliantly
using appropriate coolers and temperature-control methods.
- Prepare signage, price sheets, tablecloths,
promotional materials, samples, and displays.
Market Setup & Presentation
- Arrive early to secure setup space and create an
inviting, branded display.
- Ensure all products are attractively
merchandised, properly labeled, and visible to customers.
- Monitor product temperature throughout the event
to maintain food safety.
- Sales, Customer Engagement, and Brand
Representation
- Greet customers warmly, share knowledge about
our products and practices, and answer questions about ingredients, sourcing,
and farming methods.
- Handle sales transactions through the
point-of-sale system, including cash and card payments.
- Promote weekly specials, new product releases,
and bundle offers.
- Collect customer contact info for email lists or
SMS marketing (as directed).
Post-Market Responsibilities
- Tally sales and inventory; report daily totals
and product feedback.
- Return unsold product, signage, and equipment to
the farm.
- Clean and sanitize coolers, crates, and any food
contact surfaces used at the market.
- Complete and submit sales log, inventory return
sheet, and feedback form after every market.
Inventory & Supplies
- Notify management when inventory is low or when packaging
supplies need reordering.
- Participate in periodic stock checks and freezer
inventory audits.
Other Responsibilities
- Attend mandatory seasonal training or
orientation sessions.
- Assist with wholesale deliveries, pop-up events,
or farm tours when needed.

Sales Performance
- Good: Maintains a baseline of regular sales.
- Better: Grows sales through strong product
knowledge and proactive selling.
- Best: Grows weekly average sales by 20%+ through
exceptional upselling, cross-selling, and customer loyalty.
Customer Engagement
- Good: Answers product questions and ensures
customers feel welcome.
- Better: Shares farm stories and aligns customer
interests with our regenerative mission.
- Best: Collects testimonials or repeat purchase
feedback that results in measurable growth in DTC sales.
Setup & Cleanliness
- Good: Booth is properly set up and broken down
on time.
- Better: Display is optimized for foot traffic
and draws attention.
- Best: Booth earns compliments or features in
local media, and setup improvements are suggested and implemented.
Reliability
- Good: Shows up on time and follows standard
operating procedures.
- Better: Volunteers to pick up extra shifts or
train new market staff.
- Best: Takes ownership of specific markets and
improves overall operations.
Customer Acquisition & Retention
- Good: Adds 5–10 new contacts to the farm's mailing
list per market.
- Better: Converts one-time buyers into repeat
customers through bundle education or follow-up touchpoints.
- Best: Develops a core of loyal market customers
that generate 20%+ repeat weekly sales.
Requirements (Expected Proficiencies)
- Minimum 1 year of direct-to-consumer or
commission-based sales experience required. Applicants must demonstrate past
success in upselling, customer conversion, or meeting individual sales targets.
- Must be available for all market days of a
market season.
- Valid driver's license and ability to drive own
transportation to market sites with room for 4-5 coolers and market setup
items.
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather
conditions, including summer heat or rain. (Markets are all Rain or Shine) Some Winter Markets have indoor Locations
- Ability to lift 50-75 lbs. repeatedly and stand
for extended periods.
- Familiarity with food safety best practices
(training provided).
- Confident communicator with professional
customer service etiquette.
- Ability to track inventory, sales, and feedback
accurately.
- Alignment with Steadfast Farms’ mission and
commitment to sustainable agriculture.
Dress Code & Appearance
Team members must maintain a neat,
clean, and confident appearance that reflects positively on Steadfast Farms.
Attire should be presentable, weather-appropriate, and suited for
high-engagement sales environments. Branded gear (such as hats or shirts) may
be provided for certain events, but experienced sales professionals are
expected to wear polished, farm-appropriate clothing that enhances
approachability and supports brand presentation. Closed-toe shoes are required
for on-farm work but are optional at market sites unless otherwise specified.
Compensation and Payment Terms
Hourly Wage
$17.50–$20.00 per hour, based on experience.
All required work time is paid, including market preparation at the farm,
loading and unloading, travel to and from market locations, market setup and
breakdown, sales time, and post-market cleanup and storage.
Sales Incentive
Eligible for a per-market sales commission once a minimum sales threshold is
met.
- Commission is earned at 4% of gross market
sales after $700 in total sales is reached for that market day.
- Commission is calculated per market and paid in
accordance with the regular payroll schedule.
- Sales incentives are not guaranteed and vary
based on market performance.
Mileage Reimbursement
Mileage is reimbursed at $0.67 per mile, round-trip, for travel between
the farm and assigned market locations. Mileage reimbursement is paid
separately from hourly wages.
Payment Schedule
Hourly wages, sales incentives, and mileage reimbursements are paid weekly
through payroll.
